According to a new rumor, Apple would use a 48 megapixel sensor on the iPhone of 2022. Customers of the Cupertino company could thus benefit from the pixel bining which makes it possible to capture more light on photos in low light.
Today, Android smartphone manufacturers tend to increase the resolution of photo sensors used by their smartphones. Samsung and Xiaomi even offer 108 megapixel sensors on some of their models. And according to rumors circulating on the web, a 200 megapixel sensor is even in the pipes.
Apple, for its part, has not followed this trend. For example, the iPhone 12 Pro Max , the best model of the iPhone generation of 2020, is content with three 12-megapixel sensors. But the good news (or not) is that Apple could finally use a 48 megapixel sensor on … the iPhone 14, in 2022.
In any case, this is what is suggested by an article in MacRumours, which relays a note allegedly written by analyst Ming Chi Kuo. This 48-megapixel sensor could produce 48-megapixel photos, but also 12-megapixel images, by merging pixels.

If you are familiar with this technique, it is because it has already been used by Samsung for a while. Called pixel bining, it consists of combining pixels in low-light photos in order to capture more light and therefore take clearer photos. On the other hand, still according to the article by Ming Chi Kuo, the iPhones of 2022 could be able to take videos in 8K.
Of course, for the moment, this is unofficial information. And therefore, caution is always in order. Still, given the efforts of its competitors to improve the quality of photos and videos on premium devices, it would make sense for Apple to make significant improvements on its upcoming models as well.
For example, this year, OnePlus formalized a partnership with photo specialist Hasselblad. Vivo has formed a partnership with Carl Zeiss. And according to rumors, Samsung could partner with Olympus. For its part, Xiaomi is making great efforts in the field of photography on its Mi 11 Ultra model , which has allowed it to become the new king of mobile photography.
A successor to the iPhone 12 mini in 2021?
Apple does not publish data on its iPhone sales. Therefore, it is not known which are the most popular models, and which are the less popular models.
Nevertheless, many external sources have suggested that while the iPhone 12 series is selling very well, the sales of the iPhone 12 mini will not be very satisfactory. Moreover, Apple has already planned to reduce the production of this “mini” model, because of this weak demand. Also, many observers wonder if there will be a successor to the iPhone 12 mini in 2021.
According to the MacRumours article, Apple is still planning to release a “mini” model with a 5.4-inch screen this year. Nevertheless, after the release of the iPhone 13 mini, it will no longer have a 5.4-inch version of the iPhone 14 in 2022.
