Samsung relies heavily on folding smartphones. And each year, the manufacturer offers a new improvement on this new range of Galaxy smartphones. For example, in 2020, the manufacturer offered more durable screens, thanks to a new material called UTG or ultra-thin glass.
And while Samsung’s 2021 folding smartphones are yet to be released, rumors are already circulating about those from… 2022. In an article published this week, the Android Authority site relays news from Gizmochina about a future folding smartphone which would be called Galaxy Z Fold Tab.
This model would be released in the first quarter of next year and its particularity would be that instead of folding two like the other models on the market, the Galaxy Z Fold Tab would fold in three, thanks to two hinges. In addition to this feature, the device would also support Samsung’s S Pen stylus, and would have a screen protected by ultra thin glass (UTG).
For the moment, of course, this is only a rumor and therefore, caution remains in order. However, as more and more smartphone manufacturers are offering folding models, it would make sense for Samsung to look for new ways to differentiate itself, in order to position itself as an innovative brand in the field.
Indeed, this year Xiaomi finally launched its first folding smartphone, with a design very close to that of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. And according to some sources, Oppo and Google are also expected to present their first foldable screen smartphones this year.
On the other hand, Samsung Display has already signaled its interest in this type of design (screens that fold in three). In November, the Korean Samsung Display blog posted a few drawings showing the ideas the company is considering to exploit flexible displays. And among those designs, there was a model with a screen that folds in three.
In the meantime, the 2021 models are expected to be presented in July.
Normally, Samsung should still present its new foldable smartphones for 2021. Indeed, the manufacturer seems to have wanted to reserve its January event for the Galaxy S21 in order to give maximum visibility to these competitors of the iPhone 12.
And according to unofficial sources, Samsung will present its next folding smartphones at an event in July. The two models that Samsung will present would be the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip.
However, the manufacturer is also expected to unveil a more affordable model, as suggested by TM Roh, the boss of the mobile division, at the end of 2020. In a blog post, he wrote : ” True to our heritage of staying one step ahead with cutting edge mobile technology, we will expand our portfolio of foldable products, so that this revolutionary category is more accessible to everyone. “
